Getting a Foreign Degree Recognized: U.S., Brazil and Mexico

By: The Look Jobs Team

If you studied in one country and want to work in another, you may need to show that your degree is equivalent to a local one. Each country has its own official process.

United States

There's no single federal agency. Employers, universities and licensing boards usually ask for a credential evaluation from a member of NACES or AICE. Evaluations are paid and can take weeks. Regulated professions such as healthcare and law also have state-specific licensing rules.

Brazil

Undergraduate degrees are revalidated, and master's and doctoral degrees recognized, through the Ministry of Education's Plataforma Carolina Bori, together with participating Brazilian universities.

Mexico

The Secretaría de Educación Pública handles revalidation of studies completed abroad through its online SERE system.

Tips

  • Keep your original transcripts, course descriptions and diploma.
  • Get certified translations when required.
  • Start early. The process can take months.

In the meantime, add your education to your Look Jobs profile.
