How to Write a U.S.-Style Resume That Gets Noticed

By: The Look Jobs Team

A resume is often the only chance you get to make a first impression. Hiring managers in the U.S. skim hundreds of them, so yours needs to be clear, focused and easy to scan.

Leave these out

  • Photo: U.S. resumes do not include one.
  • Personal details: age, date of birth, marital status, children or ID numbers. Employers avoid this information to prevent bias.
  • Full street address: city and state are enough.

Include these

  • A short summary (2–3 lines) at the top: who you are and what you bring.
  • Work experience in reverse chronological order, with measurable results: numbers, goals met, projects delivered.
  • Action verbs at the start of each bullet: led, managed, increased, built.
  • Languages with your real level. Being bilingual is a strong advantage, so make it visible.

Length and format

Keep it to one page if you have less than 10 years of experience, two at most otherwise. Use a simple font and avoid tables or columns so applicant tracking systems can read it. Save it as a PDF.
