How to Research Pay Before You Negotiate (U.S., Brazil and Mexico)

By: The Look Jobs Team

Knowing the going rate before you negotiate is the best way to avoid accepting less than you're worth. Free official sources exist in all three countries.

United States

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook shows median pay for hundreds of occupations, typical education and job outlook. Pay varies widely by state and metro area.

Brazil

The Ministry of Labor's Novo Caged publishes average starting salaries every month, by region and occupation.

Mexico

The Labor Ministry's Observatorio Laboral and Data México show average income by degree, occupation and state.

When you negotiate

  • Look at the whole package: benefits, bonuses, health insurance, remote work.
  • Give a range rather than a single number, and back it up with your experience.
  • If the role requires languages, remember that being bilingual is a valuable skill.
