Cover Letters: When You Need One and How to Write It

By: The Look Jobs Team

In the U.S., many employers still ask for a cover letter, especially in administrative, healthcare and education roles. Even when it's optional, a good one helps you explain what your resume can't.

A simple 4-part structure

  1. Opening: name the role you're applying for and how you found it.
  2. Why you: two or three experiences that match what the job asks for.
  3. Why this company: show you know what they do.
  4. Closing: thank them and say you'd welcome a conversation.

Golden rules

  • Keep it to one page.
  • Write one letter per job. Generic letters are obvious from the first line.
  • If the job requires another language, consider writing the letter in that language. It's your first proof of fluency.
  • Proofread, and double-check the company and hiring manager's names.
